PRESIDENT BIDEN COMES TO REHOBOTH!
Bidens are expected to return throughout summer,
but will feds reimburse local police?
President Joe Biden came to North Shores last week for two nights to celebrate
his wife's 70th birthday. With the Bidens came an array of specialized vehicles
and an estimated 300 Secret Service agents and support personnel.
His Wednesday evening arrival was picturesque. Marine
One and its two decoys had been escorted by the state police helicopter
to the Gordons Pond lot where two of them landed surrounded by the
beautiful backdrop of the Cape Henlopen State Park.
Excited fans lined the streets and waited for the President whenever he was
expected.
The President had only two public appearances during his three-day visit.

yelled easy questions as he bicycled
on the Gordons Pond Trail.

On Friday, he took this 22-vehicle
motorcade to the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center where he delivered
remarks on the May
jobs report. From there, it was back to Marine One at Gordons
Pond and back to the White House.
With the President expected to return throughout the summer, the question
of who is paying for state and municipal expenses has not been resolved. "While
our agency has been told that there is a historical possibility of federal
funding, we have not to date been provided a means by which to seek reimbursement,"
says Lt. Jaime Riddle, Rehoboth Beach police spokesman. He said RBPD had 14
sworn members involved in Friday's initiative.
State troopers have been even more involved in his protection, especially
in Wilmington. As far as federal reimbursements for the state police, Cpl.
Jason Hatchell, state police spokesman, said on Sunday that his agency will
provide an answer to that question in the near future.

2 FILE SO FAR TO RUN FOR REHOBOTH CITY COMMISSIONER
Lynne Coan, city spokeswoman, said Friday morning that so far only current
Comm. Richard Byrne and Planning Comm. Rachel Macha have submitted petitions
to run for the two soon-to-be-open commissioner seats. Comm.
Pat Coluzzi has said she is not seeking another term.
The deadline to file is today at 4:30 p.m. More info is on the

GROVE PARK CANAL DOCK COULD OPEN ON SATURDAY!
The ribbon cutting was held on May 7, but the dock has yet to open for public
use. Lynne Coan, city spokeswoman, said on Friday that the city is tentatively
working toward opening the dock on Saturday, June 12.
Cameras have been installed and fencing is expected to be completed sometime
this week, weather permitting, she said. Both were required to meet insurance
requirements.
She said that the city's commissioners will consider issuing contracts at
the June 18 meeting for water taxi and kayak businesses.
As for a kayak launch, Coan says the city arborist, Liz Lingo, said she believed
that fundraising and grant work is ongoing for the kayak chute. There is a
launch on the floating dock. A gate is included as part of the additional
fencing in the future chute location.

MAN BACKS OVER PARKING KIOSK, GETS CITED
Police have charged a man after he backed over this multi-space parking kiosk
around 5:25 a.m. this past Wednesday here on Grenoble Place.
Lt. Jaime Riddle, police spokesman, says the man was not intoxicated. But
he was charged for having no valid license and improper backing.

POLICE, DNREC INVESTIGATE SPILL ON REHOBOTH AVE
Investigation of source still underway
Rehoboth Beach police and DNREC investigated a spill here in the ocean block
of Rehoboth Avenue around 9:30 a.m. this past Wednesday. Presumably the source
was a truck picking up used frier oil. Passing vehicles and pedestrians further
spread the slippery substance along Rehoboth Avenue and to nearby sidewalks.
This past Saturday, Lt. Jaime Riddle, police spokesman, said this incident
remains under investigation. "As a result," he added, "the
release of additional information could affect the investigation."

WATER MAIN BREAK ON OLIVE AVE QUICKLY REPAIRED BY
CITY
This water main broke just before 5 p.m. this past Friday in the ocean block
of Olive Avenue. Kevin Williams, Rehoboth Beach public works director, said
it fed the fire protection line at the Patrician Towers.
The city's water crews responded within a few minutes with several trucks
and had it quickly repaired.

STARBOARD HOSTS COVID VACCINATION EVENT
Vaccinated receive coupons for free orange crushes!
This past Saturday, The Starboard became the first business in Dewey
and perhaps in the entire area to sponsor a Covid vaccination site. "The
Starboard in Dewey Beach due to its highly known popularity was asked
to be a site for the State of Delaware's Division of Public Health
and DEMA [Delaware Emergency Management Agency] this [past]
weekend with so many folks descending on Dewey Beach for the summer,"
said Steve "Monty" Montgomery, owner of the popular landmark.
"With restaurants finally open to full occupancy and masks now recommended
only for those who are not vaccinated, The Starboard is one of many
restaurants giving back to its community by offering free orange crushes
as an incentive to anyone who would like to get themselves vaccinated but
has yet to do so," Montgomery said.
"After losing 16 months of our business to the Covid pandemic,"
says Montgomery, "we are happy to be involved with whatever necessary
to ensure we can have an incredible season this summer!"
STOLEN TOPIARIES MYSTERIOUSLY RETURN
A pair of topiaries, the sphere-shaped decorations on the shafts shown below,
was stolen from Stitch-Stash, on the
Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Patti Hoffmann, owner of the popular Rehoboth
Beach needlepoint store, said she was disappointed when she came to her shop
and found them missing.
But interestingly, the $700 topiaries were mysteriously returned this past
Friday. Hoffmann says she thinks perhaps the thief felt guilty or one of their
family or friends encouraged them to return them to her shop. She said she
reported it to police but had no suspects.

PRIDE FLAG RAISED DURING REHOBOTH CITY HALL CEREMONY
CAMP Rehoboth Pres. Chris Beagle, Mayor Stan Mills, City Manager
Sharon Lynn, Comm. Patrick Gossett, CAMP Rehoboth Exec. Dir. David
Mariner and CAMP Rehoboth Program Dir. Salvatore Seeley raised the
Pride flag at city hall this past Tuesday morning in recognition of LGBTQ
Pride Month.
"As a city commissioner, I am proud that the city is honoring our LGBTQ
citizens and visitors by raising the rainbow flag and officially designating
June as LGBTQ Pride Month," Comm. Gossett said. "I join
the mayor and our other commissioners in thanking CAMP Rehoboth for
joining in the flag-raising ceremony and for all the meaningful work they
have done in over a quarter of a century of 'Creating A More Positive Rehoboth,'"
he added.
The flag will fly at city hall through the month of June.

Oystercatchers at Gordons Pond beach by Diane Scobey...
The beach was mostly deserted as it was closed for most of the day for the
President's helicopters. Oystercatchers
are often solitary and not seen around here on a regular basis.

MERR REPORT--- Suzanne Thurman from the MERR
Institute reports that last week her organization investigated the deaths
of three bottlenose dolphin calves and a sea turtle. The remains were found
between Conquest Road and Beach Plum Island. Two of the dolphins had signs
of dolphin infanticide (killed by adult male dolphins).
WOMAN DIES IN DEWEY BALCONY COLLAPSE--- Tragically, one
of the two women who were injured when the balcony floor gave way on Memorial
Day in Dewey has died. More info is on WGMD.com.
DBP LIFEGUARD STAND REPORTED STOLEN--- The Dewey Beach
Patrol lifeguard stand on Chesapeake Street was reported stolen last Friday
morning. Police have taken a report.
