5 FILE FOR 2 REHOBOTH COMMISSIONER SEATS

Five candidates have filed to run for the two commissioner seats that are up for grabs this summer. The candidates are Timothy Bennett, a Rehoboth political newcomer, current Comm. Richard Byrne, Suzanne Goode who ran for commissioner in 2019, Rachel Macha who is on the planning commission and ran for commissioner last summer, and former Comm. Toni Sharp who last served in 2019.

More info on the candidates is in the Cape Gazette. The deadline to register to vote in this election is the close of business on Thursday, July 15. Election day is Saturday, August 14. More info is on the city website.

COUNTING AND TAGGING HORSESHOE CRABS
You can volunteer to be part of important research.

People are fascinated by the horseshoe crabs and the Center for the Inland Bays allows folks to get a closer look while helping document the crabs' population. The organization has been counting and tagging horseshoe crabs for years.

Comm. Pat Coluzzi and Dale Sheldon were among those last week volunteering on the bayside at Tower Road during high tide under a full and new moon.

Data from the Center for the Inland Bays shows that Delaware's inland bays (Rehoboth, Indian River and Little Assawoman bays) host a significant horseshoe crab spawning population and that spawning density approaches what has been reported in Delaware Bay surveys.

The Center for the Inland Bays is sponsoring this program in Ocean View this Wednesday where people can learn more about the crab and participate in a demonstration survey. The organization also has three more surveys scheduled this month.

After her long nighttime crawl through the surf, this prehistoric arthropod tried to make her way back home before the sun rose today. In May and June, our Delaware Bay becomes their largest spawning zone on Earth. Only 0.0001 of her eggs will make it to adulthood. But her blue copper-rich blood is incredibly important for its medical applications, especially for vaccine testing. She's so large and slow, and her tail is her only rudder. So I picked her up by the shell and steered her back into the waves for another day in her mating cycle.

REHOBOTH POLICE AND EMS HELP RESCUE GIRL LOCKED IN SUV

Rehoboth Beach police and EMS came to assist a mother who accidentally locked her little girl in this running GMC SUV. It was reported around 4 p.m. last Monday in the ocean block of Rehoboth Avenue.

Unless a child or animal is inside, motorists who lock keys in cars are typically referred to a locksmith. But in a situation like this, the Rehoboth Beach VFC ambulance responds with police. The ambulance has the common vehicle lockout tools. But in this case, they were unsuccessful using the tools and ended up breaking the small side window. The girl was fine.

NORTH INDIAN BEACH SIGN REMOVED FROM DEWEY BEACH

This sign got some attention after it was allegedly erected within the Dewey Beach boundary earlier this season. "It was originally placed on a Dewey Beach area by mistake and was removed," says Dewey Beach Mayor Dale H. Cooke. "We have checked with the state. The community evidently has the legal right to place the sign on their private beach area, as long as they request and receive state approval," Mayor Cooke added.

Tom Roman, who represents the North Indian Beach homeowners, said he was not aware there was any controversy. "North Indian Beach is a private beach and signs are put up every summer," he pointed out. Beach access and ownership at certain locations in Delaware is somewhat complicated. SCOOTER RIDER STRUCK BY HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER
Police look for striking auto.

The man riding this MVP scooter was injured after he was struck by an auto in the Rehoboth Avenue traffic circle around 2:30 p.m. this past Saturday. He declined an ambulance to the hospital.

Witnesses helped police with a description of the striking auto. No word yet from police if that vehicle and driver have been located.

RANGE ROVER vs. PORSCHE ON 3RD STREET

You know you are in a high-class beach resort when two cars collide on a quiet back street and both are luxury automobiles! The Porsche sustained damage to its driver's side fender while the Range Rover's tire was flattened.

This happened just after 3 p.m. on Third Street at Lake Avenue in downtown Rehoboth. There were no injuries. No word yet from police on any charges.

WINE, FOOD & MUSIC FESTIVAL TICKETS GO ON SALE
Fundraiser to help two local charities.

The 6th annual 2021 Southern Delaware Wine, Food & Music Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Independence Clubhouse and grounds in Long Neck, minutes away from the Delaware beaches.

The Developing Artist Collaboration and the Delaware Restaurant Association will enjoy the proceeds of a day of fun and fundraising with food tastings from 20 restaurants from the Culinary Coast, 100 different wines, beers, cocktails and spirits, great music -- and a surprise event.

Tickets will be available starting June 15 on sodelfest.com.

REHOBOTH'S HISTORIC TENT HOUSE OPENS TO VISITORS

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society will host a series of open houses for the historic Anna Hazzard Tent House. A portion of this historic structure dates back to 1895. It was the original home of Methodist minister Rev. Adams during the time of the Methodist camp meetings. Once owned by Anna Hazzard, the first female licensed realtor in Delaware, it was later donated to the city by its last owners, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald James. The house was moved from its home on Baltimore Avenue to its current location at 17 Christian Street in 1975.

Visitors are next welcome between 10 a.m. and noon this Wednesday, June 16. No reservations are required. There will be lemonade and cookies, and visitors can learn more about Anna Hazzard and the camp meeting era in Rehoboth Beach from the society's volunteers. JERRY STRUM OPENS "JOURNEY" AT GALLERY 50

The name of the show is "Journey," says artist Jerry Strum, because this exhibition is about his personal journey during Covid. Since the art world was closed during Covid, he says that gave him "an opportunity to just paint for myself and explore where I wanted to go. I did not have to create for anybody else or for sale."

"I always wanted to move to abstraction," Strum says, so he started this journey by studying, reading and watching video.

"This series here shows an example of how I went from a more realistic to a less realistic to a more abstracted version of things and then as you go around the gallery you will see from more realistic to less realistic to abstraction," he explains.

This is actually a series of five paintings. All five are the same scene. "I just kept doing it and doing it and doing it, and changing perspective and direction and palette," he said.

He started this exhibition with pastels, and then began to go back into acrylic, mixed media and collage. "It was my journey of exploration and understanding," he points out.

On his artist statement is a quote that motivated him from Laura Pollock, an artist who influenced his work in this exhibition: "An abstract painting takes pieces of reality and melds them with imagination and then invites the viewer to stop in and interpolate the story." That, he says, was his motivation.

RAL OPENS ANNUAL FINE CRAFT EXHIBITION

The Rehoboth Art League opened its 48th Annual Members' Fine Craft Exhibition this past Friday. The popular exhibition features work from the league's diverse membership. "The members' fine craft show has always been one of the most well attended shows that we have," says Nick Serratore, RAL's exhibitions director. "If you go through all the mediums of glass, ceramic, fiber, wood, steel, bronze, it is all right here showcased in these two big rooms... the quality is fantastic," he said.

"I think all the artwork actually balances from one piece to the next. It is a visual feast. When it comes to fine craft, there is a connection a lot of people have with it. I think it is a strong show and we are happy to have it and we are glad to be back with the crowds," Serratore added.

Among the artists attending was Stephen Tindall, a jewelry maker. He had taken a jewelry class years ago, but he says he got started again after collecting sea glass while surf fishing. These were made from what he found on the beach.

This is Gary Crowl with his double-wheel wind sculptures. They are greased and spin smoothly with the slightest breeze!

Two other exhibitions also opened at RAL on Friday, Earth, Water, and Fire by Lisa Battle and The Human Form, A Moment In Time by Jeff Kibler.

The gaggle at the Rehoboth Beach Library breezeway by Susan Howard... "I don't know where they were nesting," she writes, "but one of the librarians saw them earlier on one of the streets in town coming from the direction of Silver Lake. After they went through the breezeway, they crossed The Avenue heading toward the convention center parking lot. It was such a sweet sight."

MERR REPORT--- Suzanne Thurman from the MERR Institute reports that last week her organization investigated the deaths of two bottlenose dolphins and five loggerhead sea turtles. They were all fairly decomposed so no cause of death was determined.

DEWEY BEACH ROBBERY--- Sgt. Clifford Dempsey, Dewey Beach police spokesman, says the police investigated a robbery around 12:15 a.m. last Wednesday on the ocean side of Saulsbury Street. It was "senior week related" he said. The victim was jumped and robbed of his chain and shoes.

MAN INJURED BY LIGHTNING STRIKE--- A man was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries after he was hit either directly or indirectly by lightning, says Robert Mauch, Sussex County EMS spokesman. It was reported around 3:50 p.m. last Wednesday on Bay Oaks Drive near Angola.
