UPDATE- US RT 13 Crash Bridgeville- sent 3:40 p.m.
Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is currently investigating a three vehicle crash that has left one person dead. The crash occurred this morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. on U.S. 13 (Sussex Highway) just south of Riffle Range Road (CR 545).
Investigators learned that a 1988 Chev. Blazer operated by Matthew C. Slater, 17, of Harrington, was southbound on US13 in the left lane approaching the intersection of Rifle Range Road. A second vehicle, a 2001 Chev. Silverado, operated by Quinton M. Stone, 43, of Laurel was stationary in the median crossover, facing west, waiting to proceed across the southbound lanes of US13. The third vehicle, a 2003 Ford Ranger operated by Walter H. Usilton, 72, of Salisbury, MD, was northbound on US13 in the right lane, approaching the intersection of Rifle Range Road.
The Blazer operated by Mr. Slater, for an unknown reason veered left and proceeded to enter the median, and struck the left front of the Silverado operated by Mr. Stone. The Blazer continued into the grass median entering the northbound lanes of US13. The Ford Ranger, operated by Mr. Usilton, attempted to steer right, but was unable to avoid the Blazer resulting in a second collision. After impact, both the Blazer and the Ranger exited the roadway and stopped in the entranceway of Scott’s Furniture Store, where a brick pillar was damaged.
As a result of the crash, Mr. Usilton sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Slater sustained facial and internal injuries and was admitted at Nanticoke Hospital in stable condition. Mr. Stone was uninjured. All parties were wearing their seatbelts. No alcohol is suspected. US RT 13 (north) was closed for approximately three hours while investigators examined the scene.
