BIDEN COMES TO REHOBOTH VIA COASTAL HIGHWAY MOTORCADE!
President Joe Biden surprised many when his 20+ vehicle motorcade drove down Coastal Highway from Dover Air Force Base and looped around the Rehoboth Avenue roundabout at 4:27 p.m. this past Saturday.
According to USAF VIP LOGISTICS, this is the President's 15th visit to his beach house here since taking office.
About an hour after he arrived, he departed his North Shores home and headed for 5:30 p.m. mass at Saint Edmond Roman Catholic Church.
These two guys seemed oblivious that the President would be passing them in 10 seconds as he motorcaded to church!
The motorcade moved through the back streets leaving many visitors wondering what was happening.
The President emerged from mass about an hour later and returned to his North Shores beach home where he remained on Sunday.

Today, Monday, the President is scheduled to depart Gordon's Pond via helicopter around 9:50 a.m. and fly to Dover Air Force Base where he will board Air Force One for Santa Clara County, California.

CITY SHUTS DOWN UNSANCTIONED BANDSTAND PERFORMER
City officials sent this man packing last Thursday evening after he had been playing tunes on the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.
He is Dr. Michael Rawlins, a college professor, who says he had been entertaining visitors who would stop and listen to him strumming an acoustic guitar while singing classic rock tunes such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Johnny Cash, among others.
"It's a great space and yeah... I was really quite surprised that they asked me to stop performing," he said. Dr. Rawlins has been thinking about asking the town if he could host an open mic here, perhaps on slow nights like Thursdays, and this might be his opportunity.
He lived in western Massachusetts for years and recently moved to Lewes. He is a full-time faculty member at the University of Massachusetts where he teaches climate dynamics and has federal research grants to study the Arctic and Arctic hydrology. "We so understand climate change, climate variability, and things like that and this is my left brain, right brain, my other kind of artistic side," he explained.
This isn't the first time the city canceled unsanctioned performers here. Matthew Bennett Davey was shut down in 2017 after several performances here also on Thursday nights.
Lynne Coan, spokeswoman for the city, provided this statement on Friday concerning the use of the bandstand:
The bandstand is a city facility and is not open to use by the public for performances or events without an approved special event permit from the city. When organizations wish to engage in expressive activities at the bandstand, we ask that they complete an expressive activity permit application. This enables city staff to properly schedule these events while coordinating among the various city departments to minimize scheduling conflicts and traffic impacts and alleviate safety issues.

ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS HONORS SEN. CARPER IN REHOBOTH
U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee chairman, surrounded by members of the Army Corps of Engineers along with city, state, and federal officials, received the Gold de Fleury Medal for his work supporting the mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The ceremony took place on the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand early Friday afternoon where dark storm clouds soon approached from the north.
Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, the 55th Chief of Engineers and commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, presented the award to Sen. Carper at a ceremony that included remarks from Rehoboth Beach Mayor Stan Mills, Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, Sen. Carper (of course!), U.S. Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester, among others.
Each year, the Corps awards the Gold de Fleury Medal to one individual outside the Army Engineer Regiment. As the Corps' highest honor, the de Fleury Medal honors and recognizes individuals who have provided significant contributions to Army engineering. The medal also emphasizes the history, customs, and traditions of the Army Corps of Engineers community.
The Corps selected Sen. Carper for his leadership in addressing the nation's water resources infrastructure needs. In 2021, the Senator led a bipartisan group of senators in securing $17.1 billion for the Army Civil Works program as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. That funding helps the Corps implement studies and projects, maintain existing infrastructure, and dredge channels in response to floods and coastal storms. Under Sen. Carper's leadership, the EPW Committee also drafted and passed the seventh consecutive biennial Water Resources Development Act in 2022.

HOMELESS IN REHOBOTH?
This past Tuesday, police were led to what appeared to have been a homeless encampment in the woods adjacent to the third block of Park Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach.
It's an unusual find in a neighborhood with multi-million dollar beach homes. The clothing and other items appeared to have been abandoned some time ago and were waterlogged.
After police checked for anything of value, the soaked clothing was discarded in a trash truck.

THE AMAZING HORSESHOE CRABS
People are fascinated by horseshoe crabs and April through June are important months for these prehistoric creatures, with peak spawning occurring in May.
Migratory shorebirds depend on horseshoe crab eggs which are packed full of protein and fatty acids.

FEMALE BICYCLIST HIT BY AUTO IN OCEAN CITY
A 43-year-old woman riding a bike was struck at high speed by a Dodge Charger around 6:15 p.m. this past Saturday. It happened here on the northbound side of Coastal Highway at 36th Street in Ocean City.

She had a cut on her scalp but was conscious and alert when she was flown to a trauma center.
Ocean City firefighters responded to two other injuries that required flyouts to trauma centers this past week: Around 5 a.m. last Monday, the driver was injured in a single-vehicle single-occupant crash into a pole on Airport Road. Around 10 a.m. this past Wednesday, an 8-month-old was taken to the 10th Street Medical Center after falling from a bed and becoming unresponsive.
ENDLESS SUMMER ART SHOW AT GEL Z ART AND SURF
"We have lots of greatness this year," Angelica 'Gel Z' Clemmer said during her gallery's opening this past Saturday. The studio is at 200-B Rehoboth Avenue (on Second Street south of Rehoboth Avenue). Gel Z is a local surfer and artist who showcases and sells her art with the purpose of spreading love and harmony by painting colorful and happy things.
On display is art by Lutra Sea, Bonnie Preziosi, Amanda Pace, Gañizú, Jeff Kibler, Coca Silveira, Moi, and Gel Z!
Coca Silveira is a designer, painter and mix-media artist. She shares her beautiful enameled porcelain flowers as well as her new prints and photographs recently taken in Rehoboth Beach.
Bonnie Preziosi, painter and illustrator, smiles posing by her fascinating acrylic landscapes.
Amanda Pace, a mosaic artist, displays her most recent glass and tile mosaics, some of which are used to decorate musical instruments. Pace, just married, is happy to have her work at Gel's Gallery.

MERR UPDATES--- Suzanne Thurman from the MERR Institute says her organization responded to a large offshore bottlenose male dolphin at Holt's Landing State Park. It was deceased and had signs of fisheries interaction. "We identified net and line marks on the body," she said.
MAN CAUGHT SLEEPING ON TOP OF GROTTO'S GETS ARRESTED--- Rehoboth Beach police arrested a man after responding to a report of him sleeping on the Grotto's north building roof just before 11 p.m. last Wednesday.
REHOBOTH VISITORS STILL ARE NOT COMPLYING WITH REHOBOTH TENT/CANOPY REGULATIONS--- Two beach visitors trying to skirt Rehoboth Beach tent and canopy rules got cited by police this past weekend. Typically people comply after a warning. But full-time police responded to the complaints when lifeguards and/or seasonal officers were unable to get compliance. This happened around 1:50 p.m. Saturday south of the Henlopen and around 9:25 a.m. Sunday off Delaware Avenue.
MAN GETS TRUCK STUCK ON BEACH; CHARGED WITH DUI--- Rehoboth Beach police arrested a man who drove his truck on the beach at Prospect Street and got stuck around 10 p.m. Sunday. While he was being booked for DUI, Coastal Towing came to pull the Toyota from the beach.
ATTEMPTED CARJACKING IN O.C.--- Ocean City police investigated an attempted carjacking reported around 1 a.m. last Thursday on 31st Street. Nothing was taken.
WOMAN GETS FINGER STUCK IN GUN BARREL IN O.C.--- Ocean City police and firefighters were baffled when they were called to the parking lot next to the Quality Inn on 29th Street after a woman called police stating that she had her finger stuck in the barrel of her gun. It happened around noon last Thursday. Ashley Miller, police spokeswoman, says the police responded to an "assist EMS" call for a 24-year-old woman who had her finger stuck inside a gun barrel. "The firearm was secured and Ocean City EMS personnel treated her," Miller said. There was nothing criminal in nature and police only responded to assist EMS with ensuring the scene was safe, she pointed out. She was apparently sitting in a BMW cleaning the gun at the time.
