MAN NEARLY GETS RUNOVER BY DELIVERY TRUCK IN DOWNTOWN R.B.
A 61-year-old man is fortunate to have only suffered minor injuries after a delivery truck backed over him while he was chatting with a parking enforcement officer this past Friday. The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. here in the ocean block of Wilmington Avenue. That is where the driver had been backing the truck into the driveway adjacent to the Rehoboth Ale House.
The man, who had been chatting with the parking enforcement officer, was struck on the sidewalk at the driveway (marked below by the red X). According to one witness, the victim grabbed the truck's rear bumper as he was dragged into the parking lot. Amazingly, he only suffered cuts and bruises to his lower body.
He was taken to Beebe Hospital. No word yet from police on any charges.

SUSPICIOUS MAN FRIGHTENS BEACH GOERS
He was one of those people you would definitely remember if you saw him last Monday. He wore black clothing, two jackets, a heavy winter jacket and one with a hoodie covering his head, black pants and boots. He walked for miles with a temperature in the low 80's. He was spotted on Coastal Highway just outside of Rehoboth around noon, then on Rehoboth Avenue-Extended and later in the ocean block of Wilmington Avenue.
Once he started walking along the beach on the north side of town, police and lifeguards received complaints expressing concern about the man who frightened beach visitors. He walked undeterred at a fast pace through the sand and surf. When police tried to locate the man, he was always farther north and reached the city limits around 3 p.m. headed to Cape Henlopen.
Rehoboth Beach police alerted park rangers who eventually confronted the man near the towers around 3:45 p.m. Little was said. But they were able to check him for weapons. They found none. He continued on his journey walking on the paths through the Cape Henlopen State Park, last seen headed toward Lewes.

TRANSGENDER VISITOR FILES POLICE COMPLAINT OVER RESTROOM INCIDENT
A transgender visitor filed a complaint with Rehoboth Beach police after a restroom attendant at the bandstand allegedly insisted the person use a restroom for the opposite gender. It was reported around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Steve Elkins, CAMP Rehoboth's executive director, said Sunday evening that Rehoboth Beach Police Chief Keith Banks had already notified him of the incident and the police were investigating the complaint. Elkins says under state law, persons are allowed to use the restroom with which they identify.
WILL THE HOLIDAY WEEK-LONG TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK CONTINUE?
Traffic conditions this past week left many seasoned visitors and locals wondering if this were the new normal. Robert B. King, DelDOT spokesman, did say that foggy and overcast conditions on Wednesday "as expected triggered a migration to the Outlets."
Motorists on Coastal Highway, King noted, did experience delays as reflected in this Google traffic map, which were around 40 minutes from Bethany through 5-Points. "Traffic was constant and heavy, but it was moving," He pointed out. "The signal system picked up the increase and adjusted itself as expected."
"There was a point when traffic demand did exceed the capacity of the roadway system and delays did occur," he added. Motorists experienced similar delays during Thursday's afternoon's rains, he said. "This area is definitely one the TMC [Traffic Management Center] monitors constantly."

REHOBOTH COMMISSIONER CANDIDATE NEWS
Susan Gay held her first meet-and-greet this past week at the home of Tim and Elise Burns in North Rehoboth. The issues people were concerned with the most in the Pines included storm-water management, the ocean outfall project (for those people who have property on the road the pipe will go down, their concerns were mostly about logistics and communications), water-main pipe work performed at the same time as outfall, the need for professional services in the city and how revenue will be generated to meet the demands of a growing city, beach replenishment and best ways for the city to communicate with property owners (e-mail was the most popular method, she noted).
For the coming week, Gay has a meet-and-greet planned in south Rehoboth on Wednesday afternoon, but it's full. Also, next weekend, on July 15, from 5-7 p.m., she has a meet-and-greet in Schoolvue. People can contact her at SusanGay4RB@gmail.com or call her at 302-448-6031 to RSVP.

INSERT GRATUITOUS SHARK STORY HERE....
Who doesn't love a good shark photo, especially at the beach? "Don't know the angler," writes Paul Andrews, who snapped this photo. But they were surf-fishing at the Gull's Nest north of Bethany Beach around 5 p.m. this past Wednesday. "They were fishing with squid and obviously not trying to hook a shark," he pointed out. This catch took several minutes for them to reel in. "We all thought it was a big ray until it surfaced," Andrews said. "They pulled it to shore to get the hook out and immediately released it. It swam off with ease," he said.
Capt. Mark Sampson of Fish Finder Adventures says that is a young sandbar shark which is common in the near-shore waters. "The most responsible way to release a shark from the beach is not to bring them up off the wet sand, not to pick them up or drag them around by their tail, to carefully remove the hook with a pair of pliers or de-hooking tool, or leave the hook in place and clip the leader as close to the shark as possible, and do all that in a few short minutes," Capt. Sampson added.

SUSAN FREY ART EXHIBITION OPENS AT CAMP REHOBOTH
Visual artist Susan Frey opened CREATURES, her latest exhibition, at CAMP Rehoboth this past Saturday. The show features a collection of acrylic paintings, colored pencil, collage and mixed-media works. On hand at the opening were Debbie Woods, Leslie Sinclair, Donna Resnick, Paul and Susan Frey...
Paul described his wife's work as creative and some of it as rather abstract. "I make the frames," he said, "and the first question I have to ask her when I get one of the pieces is 'Which is the top?,' so I know how to hang it properly. It is a little mysterious sometimes."
"If you like color, if you like creativity, this is the kind of art for you," he adds.
Susan has been painting for many years, she loves to do it. She likes the colors and shapes and trying to put these creatures into different situations. They are not all real-life situations, she explains. They are fantasy. Here is her mixed-media work, Rodeo Nights.
CREATURES will be displayed in the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center, 37 Baltimore Avenue, through July 30.
NEW WORK AT ELLINGER GALLERY
Here is one of Ward Ellinger's latest works, his answer to summer, Summer Hues, which was completed about a week ago.
He is expanding his gallery into the adjacent space so he can display even more of his art, about 20 more paintings. The Ward Ellinger Gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. or by appointment.
NEW FUNLAND RIDE FROM ITALY HAS BEEN A HUGE HIT
Funland's SuperFlip 360 has been "a really big hit," says Christopher Darr, Funland personnel manager. The new ride is made by the SBF Vista Group out of Italy. "Our family chose the ride because it is high thrill and also fits in a small footprint," Darr said. "It has been a big hit with our customers and many say they like it better than the old Superflip."
With rides like this, one has to consider safety. "We work incredibly hard on safety," Darr notes. "Our family member maintenance staff have been working on these rides for years which is a good thing but we also realize there is an opportunity for complacency as well. Repetition can cause errors! We have a daily maintenance program that is iPad based and makes sure a checklist is followed, wear and tear is noted and followed up on," he said.
"We deal with major maintenance issues in the winter so they are not a problem in the summer season. The combined experience of our team really is a plus also! The bottom line is that our livelihood and reputation depends on safety and we know that. Whether it is our own kids on these rides or our customers' kids it means the same thing to us," he added.

BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES RETURN TO DEWEY THIS WEEK!
The Dewey Business Partnership in conjunction with the Town of Dewey Beach is hosting the 2nd-annual Budweiser Clydesdale Parade this coming Wednesday, July 12. The theme of the event will be "The Great American Summer Celebration."
Steve "Monty" Montgomery, owner of the Starboard, who originally orchestrated the Budweiser Clydesdales' arrival last year, said he is excited to see the town turn out for unique events like this one. "Dewey Beach is built on nightlife, but we also have opportunities to engage families and have events like this, which make our town one-of-a-kind."
For the parade this Wednesday, the horses will stage at Saulsbury Street at 5 p.m. From there they will make their way to the Starboard for a parade pre-party. While petting the horses is a no-no, the public will have opportunities to take photos.
The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. and move south along Coastal Highway. The procession will stop at the Dickinson Street Circle at 7 p.m. for an hour, then continue to Van Dyke Street and the bay where they will be from 8 to 8:45 p.m. The Clydesdales will be unhitched at Van Dyke Street and be returned to the Budweiser trailers.
Dewey Beach parking meters and permitted spots will be FREE from 5 to 11 p.m.

"I thought you might enjoy these photos taken by Mona Steinhauer who was visiting next door to me last week," writes Peggy Douglas. "She found this eagle sitting in the dunes near the tower at Indian River."

HOLIDAY WEEK BOATING ACCIDENTS--- Both Delaware and Maryland officials investigated several boating accidents this past week, but none were fatal. Michael Globetti, DNREC spokesman, reported two boating accidents on the afternoon of July 4. The first was in the Rehoboth Bay when a pleasure boat approaching Dickinson Street in Dewey Beach was struck by a speeding personal watercraft. The operator of the PWC was assisted to shore by the Dewey Beach Patrol and taken to Beebe Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The second accident occurred a short time later at Massey's Landing. A pleasure boat secured to the dock was struck by a pontoon boat attempting to dock. Two people, a mother and son, were taken to Beebe Hospital as a precaution. Both were onboard the boat struck by the pontoon boat. Both accidents are being investigated by DNREC Fish & Wildlife Natural Resources Police.
On Sunday, July 2, DNREC investigated a boating incident on the Rehoboth Bay near Dewey Beach. The victim had been standing on the rear platform of a vessel when he fell off and was struck by the vessel's propeller. He was treated at Beebe Hospital for severe cuts to the left leg and released. MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER FALL AT JOLLY ROGER IN O.C.--- Originally reported as a fall from a Ferris wheel, this was later corrected by a spokesman for the park, stating that a professional acrobat with a circus performing at the park fell from a performance wheel during a show around 5:30 p.m. last Tuesday. He suffered minor injuries and was expected to be performing again this past week.
MORE PARKING RAGE IN REHOBOTH--- Rehoboth Beach police responded to two more cases of disputes over parking spaces. The first was reported around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday in the ocean block of Wilmington Avenue where a man was attempting to hold a parking spot for his brother. A woman drove into the space and allegedly struck him, but he was not injured. Around 7 p.m. Saturday, another fight over a parking spot was reported in the second block of Rehoboth Avenue. But both parties were gone when police arrived.
WOMAN CLIMBS FENCE, GETS IT IMPALED IN LEG--- A woman allegedly trying to climb the fence by Shenanigan's Irish Pub on 4th Street in Ocean City got stuck with part of the fence impaled in her leg. Rescuers had to use a tourniquet to get the bleeding to stop. It was reported around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
MAN WITH PRIOR BACK INJURY GETS INJURED IN O.C. SURF--- A 35-year-old man with a history of a previous back injury was injured again around 4 p.m. this past Thursday in the Ocean City surf. The original plan was to fly him to Baltimore from the Jolly Roger lot, but bad weather was approaching and he was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
MOTOR SCOOTER REPORTED STOLEN FROM DOWNTOWN R.B.--- Rehoboth Beach police are looking for a 2008 motor scooter with a Delaware tag that disappeared from the ocean block of Wilmington Avenue just before 1 p.m. Saturday. The owner possibly left the keys in the ignition. Also, iDewey is reporting that another scooter had been stolen on Coastal Highway near Arena's Deli this past Thursday. A state police spokesman said he could not find a report of the Arena's scooter theft.
MAN WITH BURNS TO FEET FROM BEACH TAKEN TO BEEBE--- A 29-year-old man was taken to Beebe Hospital by ambulance this past Friday after suffering burns to his feet from the beach. It was reported on the beach by lifeguards at Central Boulevard in Bethany Beach around 12:20 p.m.
SCOOTER ACCIDENT NEAR OUTLET LIQUORS--- A man riding a motor scooter crashed into the side of a car that pulled in front of him on Coastal Highway near Outlet Liquors outside Rehoboth around 6:30 p.m. this past Friday. The 53-year-old man who wore no helmet was taken to Beebe Hospital with some cuts and bruises. The vehicle he struck sustained significant damage.
INCREDIBLE OCEAN RESCUE OFF ASSATEAGUE ISLAND--- It is unusual to have a swimmer in distress in the ocean and still be swimming when fire department rescue swimmers arrive. That happened this past Friday off Assateague Island near the Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) entrance! Around 5:35 p.m., a man called for help stating that his wife and son were drifting out to sea. His son soon made his way back toward shore, but his mother continued to struggle. One fire department and three park service rescue swimmers reached the woman about 20 minutes later and brought her safely back to land.
