COMMISSIONER CANDIDATES DEBATE AT CAMP REHOBOTH

Six candidates -- some with similar views, others with quite different opinions -- got their 15 minutes in the spotlight at the 90-minute Candidates Forum Friday night. The event was co-sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Homeowners' Association and CAMP Rehoboth and took place at CAMP on Baltimore Avenue.
Most of the hot-button topics were covered -- wastewater, finances, parking and a garage, balanced growth, the environment and the CDP. Many candidates agreed "code compliant" building applications should be non-negotiable. All but one were opposed to LLC voting. Most saw the importance of tourism to the city's economy, although one advocated for ending support of Main Street.
Questions mainly from residents probed these issues. Some were limited to yes/no answers, one was artfully aimed at one participant, even though the rules were intended to restrict such questions, but most were just trying to find out where each candidate stood.
Who had the best answers? We'll find out on Election Day, August 10, which is in only 12 days!

"PINK LADY" ROBS BANK OUTSIDE REHOBOTH, AMONG 3 OTHERS
She allegedly robbed the Orrstown Bank in Carlisle, Pennsylvania two Saturdays ago followed by the M&T Bank outside Rehoboth this past Tuesday.
The following day the FBI linked her to yet another bank robbery, this time in Ayden, North Carolina. Once the FBI issued this "wanted poster" for the "Pink Lady Bandit," news outlets and social media went wild! Then she struck again on Friday in Hamlet, North Carolina.
In each case she reportedly showed the teller a note and demanded cash. She was dubbed the "Pink Lady Bandit" because in at least two of the robberies she carried a distinctive pink handbag.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for info that leads to an arrest and conviction.

100+YEAR-OLD TREE GETS CUT DOWN
Goodbye to a Giant
Delmarva Power and its contractor, Asplundh, along with Rehoboth Beach police, assisted the property owner and his tree contractor to safely remove this huge tree at 5th and Sussex streets this past week. "It was a very technical job due to the tree's size, decay and proximity to the home and electric lines," says Krys Johnson, city spokeswoman.
Based on the tree's size, Johnson said the tree is more than 100 years old. By comparison, the city was founded in 1873 and incorporated in 1891.

BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES RETURN TO DEWEY!
The Dewey Business Partnership hosted the famous Budweiser Clydesdales in a town parade this past Wednesday. These horses, which weigh about 2000 pounds each, were dressed up with all their normal brass, flowers and everything that sets them apart from every other horse in the world.
"Anheuser-Busch is kind enough to pay the enormous tab to send these horses to the Delaware State Fair each year," says Steve "Monty" Montgomery of The Starboard, and then the company sends the horses "to Dewey Beach and The Starboard Restaurant for a day to celebrate Summer, America, and A Way of Life in Dewey Beach."
Montgomery estimated the crowd at close to 10,000 people. "The businesses who represent the Dewey Business Partnership partner with the Town of Dewey Beach to cover the cost of security, fencing, traffic control and everything that goes into a huge event like this," Montgomery added.
Kelly Ranieri, Dewey Business Partnership executive director, organized the festivities, oversaw the parade and logistics while the employees at The Starboard set up the parade route, broke it down and "together they all make this one super special day for the Town of Dewey Beach and all who are lucky enough to attend," Montgomery added.

BACK AT BEEBE, AGAIN
This is starting to become a summer tradition for us. This issue is a bit thinner than usual as Dagmar recovers at Beebe Hospital from a G.I. bleed. We have been here since early Thursday.
We are grateful to the Rehoboth police, 9-1-1 operator, ambulance crew and paramedic who helped get us here as well as the wonderful staff at Beebe Hospital.
Also, thank you Judy for the beautiful bouquet. We're hoping to be back in Rehoboth this coming week.

TRANSFORMING SAND INTO ART ON REHOBOTH BEACH
With the recent great weather, Jim Cook, Rehoboth's Sandman, has been on a roll once again this season creating his primitive sand sculptures at the foot of Rodney Street. If you hadn't seen his artwork, it is worth the walk and you might get a chance to watch him in action.
Cook, a Dover resident and chemical engineer turned-sand sculpturer, is on the job much of the summer near the surf's edge. His only tools are a ballpoint pen, blowing tube, shovel and bucket. He's built nearly 500 of these sand sculptures during the past 25 years.
Here he is with Buddy from the Secret Life of Pets. "I'm on track to complete my approximate 25 sand sculptures this summer," Cook said yesterday!
Probably the most-asked question Cook hears from children is: How do you do that? Cook says he usually replies with: "You dig a big pile of sand and use a lot of water and don't stop until your character looks right."
"I think probably my favorite character thus far this summer has been ET," Cook states. "Almost everybody universally recognized that!"
Quite a bit of planning goes into each of his projects. He studies the Internet for the images, and then changes those images into sketches. "If I can draw it, I can do it in sand," he states, noting how he uses his drawings to study the gravity-pitch points, a combination of engineering and art. His work shows incredible perspective in amazing detail.

REHOBOTH BEACH COMMISSIONER CANDIDATE UPDATES!
Mark Betchkal--- Betchkal has another "coffee with the candidate" scheduled for today, Monday, at 3 p.m. at Rise Up. He has been holding regular events there. Last week he was joined by several visitors who expressed concerns regarding tree protections, hotel tax, parking garage, water/sewer rates, variances and building code, among others.
Edward Chrzanowski--- This past week Chrzanowski says he has been "hitting the streets hard going door-to-door chatting with people." You can see his signs popping up in the residential neighborhoods. "A common theme," he says, "is that there is excitement to have younger fresh blood on the commission." Last weekend he attended a brunch with Speaker Schwartzkopf and Governor Carney and chatted about Rehoboth Beach.
Charles Garlow--- We can always count on Garlow for the candidate photo of the week. When he said his family was going to help him run for commissioner, he meant it! Here is his 10-month-old grand-nephew, Hayes, studying one of Garlow's door hangers!
Susan Gay--- Gay is scheduled to appear on Mike Bradley's morning show on WGMD this Wednesday during the 8 a.m. hour. Gay is hosting "Coffee with the Candidate" at Rise Up on Tuesday, July 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and another at The Coffee Mill on Sunday, August 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
She clearly has more campaign signs up than any other candidate. In regard to campaign signs, she says "Signs have been popping up on public property and while they are allowed 10 feet back on a state road, I am not putting mine there. I have also learned that signs are going up at rental houses where the owner was uninformed. I am putting signs only where I have the expressed permission of the owner and not on public property at all."
Gary Glass--- Glass has also been hitting the residential neighborhoods heavily during these important days before election day. He has also been sending out several mailers this month like this one which should have arrived earlier this month, and this one which he sent days ago.
Suzanne Goode--- Goode says she has no events planned but she continues to go door-to-door, rather than meet with groups. "My takeaway," she says, "is that we have a remarkable group of residents here who are concerned that businesses seem to circumvent the rules, whereas residents get no such pass, even when minor matters which beg common sense are involved. There isn't enough time to meet all the 1523 voters, but I am delighted to have met a number of them in person, and to have learned about what brought them to RB either part-time or full-time."

WEEKLY MERR UPDATE--- The MERR Institute had a report at Herring Point in the Cape Henlopen State Park yesterday for a dead dolphin. Other than that, the organization has not had any other responses this past week.
MOTORCYCLIST CRITICALLY INJURED IN OCEAN VIEW CRASH--- A man was critically injured yesterday in a motorcycle crash around 8:45 a.m. on Windmill Drive at Saint George Street in the Town of Ocean View. The motorcyclist was too unstable to be flown by helicopter and had to be taken by ground to a trauma center.
