KUHNS AND GOSSETT WIN REHOBOTH ELECTION
The Rehoboth Beach 2015 campaign season came to an end Saturday when the polls closed at 6 p.m.
Wayne Steele, election inspector, read the results at 6:14 p.m.
The candidates winning the two commissioner seats are incumbent Commissioner J. Patrick Gossett and former Commissioner Paul G. Kuhns. Both will be serving three-year terms.
Interestingly, both candidates had run and lost in previous elections. After having previously served as commissioner, Kuhns was defeated in his run for commissioner in 2009, where he ran against Sargent and McGuiness. Kuhns also ran unsuccessfully against Mayor Sam Cooper in 2008. Kuhns had been elected commissioner in 2006 by three votes.
Comm. Gossett's previous loss was in 2007 when he ran as the incumbent against Stan Mills and Lorraine Zellers.

Registered voters for 2015: 1472
Number of voters: 785
Number of absentee voters: 219
Total voters: 1004 (about 68 percent of the registered voters)
Two seats for commissioner:
J. Patrick Gossett # of votes: 521 (52 percent of total voters)
Paul G. Kuhns # of votes: 545 (54 percent)
Richard J. Perry, Jr. # of votes: 407 (41 percent)
Willis H. Sargent # of votes: 465 (46 percent)

DEWEY COMMISSIONERS DISCUSS RECENT BAR VIOLENCE
During a special meeting held this past Friday, Dewey Beach commissioners discussed a couple incidents of recent bar violence. Officials were careful not to mention businesses by name, but this follows recent violence that had happened in July at North Beach and Ivy. Both establishments, which are between Dagsworthy and McKinley avenues, are owned by Alex Pires' Highway One. Representing Highway One was attorney Steve Spence.
Mayor Hanson pointed out that until these two recent incidents, Dewey has had a peaceful summer.
Police Chief Sam Mackert provided this statement to the commissioners regarding the most violent of the July incidents. He describes the frightening encounter his officers had when a fight erupted at Ivy.
During the discussion, Mayor Hanson specifically mentioned improving lighting, encouraging the establishments to hire more trained security personnel, and consider contacting state agencies and legislative representatives for help. She noted the town is extremely limited in what it can do when it comes to the establishments with liquor licenses which are under the state's control.
Other suggestions included having the bars post a bond; and threaten to revoke business licenses, much as is done for residential rental properties. Highway One is said to be planning lighting improvements. The commissioners plan to follow up with Highway One on the proposed improvements. Right now, the town has DelDOT light trailers parked in the vicinity.
Jim Laird, former town commissioner, said this meeting was "just evidence that the town under the current administration continues to work to resolution, not conflict, and I think they are on the right path." The commissioners said they will continue this discussion at next Friday's meeting.

MORE REHOBOTH AVENUE DRAWBRIDGE TROUBLES
DelDOT crews had been working on the Rehoboth Avenue drawbridge when a fire was reported in the mechanical room early Thursday.
Around 1 a.m., DelDOT crews called for firefighters to assist. The DelDOT crews had the bridge propped slightly open to allow them to weld-off an inch or so of metal bridge grate. They are attempting to make it easier for the bridge to close when it expands because of the summer heat.
But while they were welding, what may have been a smoldering electrical smoke odor came from the mechanical room, opposite from where the welding had been taking place.
The welders continued to work as firefighters investigated.
The fire appears to have started in some old wiring connected to the drive motor, says Geoff Sundstrom, DelDOT community relations director. There was no structural damage to the bridge and it is safe for vehicle traffic. It cannot be raised, however, to allow the passage of tall boats in the canal. The damage to the wiring was inspected Thursday by a consultant to determine what repairs would be necessary.
As of Sunday evening, DelDOT's Traffic Management Center says the state expects to know more Monday if and when the bridge will be able to open again for boats. To check the status of the bridge, boaters can call 800-324-8379.

SCOOTER STRUCK AGAIN IN COASTAL HWY BIKE LANE
A scooter and a Chrysler 300 collided in the northbound lanes of Coastal Highway along the "Forgotten Mile" around 12:50 p.m. Friday at F. Benson Street.
Cpl. Gary Fournier, Delaware State Police spokesman, identified the scooter rider as a 21-year-old Rehoboth man who was taken to Beebe Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was initially reported as disoriented with no recollection of the incident. The driver of the Chrysler is a 45-year-old Millsboro woman who was not injured.
Police charged the scooter rider with "unlawful to drive in a closed lane" and "driving a moped without being a licensed driver." The 45-year-old female driver of the Chrysler was not charged as she was making a lawful turn onto F. Benson Street, Cpl. Fournier added.
Another similar scooter accident was reported around 1:50 p.m. Saturday. It happened when a car pulled in front of a 29-year-old man on a scooter on the shoulder in the area of Cape Windsor on Lighthouse Road. He wore a helmet and suffered only minor injuries.

ANOTHER BEACH PATROL STAND FOUND FLOATING OFF O.C.
When Ocean City lifeguards and the Coast Guard brought to shore a lifeguard stand at 65th Street around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, there was hope it was the seventh and last missing RBP lifeguard stand. This one had a red "2" spray-painted on its side with "KEEP OFF" along the footrest.
O.C.B.P. Capt. Butch Arbin said he had gotten word later that this stand is from South Bethany. Other patrols in the Bethany area, such as Sea Colony, have had "floated chair" trouble as well this summer. Attempts to contact the South Bethany patrol this weekend for comment have been unsuccessful.

5th PIZZA SHOP OPENS ON OCEAN BLOCK OF REHOBOTH AVE
America's Pie At The Beach, the fifth pizza restaurant to open in the ocean block of Rehoboth Avenue provided free samples on Sunday. The new restaurant joins Louie's, Grotto's, Nicola's and the Dough Roller.
The owners come from West Chester, Pennsylvania and hope to be open all year long.

REHOBOTH BEACH POLICE ENCOURAGE SAFE PEDESTRIAN HABITS
Amazingly, Rehoboth Beach has not had a serious pedestrian injury in recent memory, and police want to keep it that way.
Rehoboth Beach officers greeted pedestrians Saturday on Rehoboth Avenue to warn them of roadway dangers. They distributed the Surfing Route One? flier from the Office of Highway Safety website.
Although they said no tickets were being issued, the flier warns pedestrians that they could face fines of up to $75 for pedestrian violations.

TARA FUNK GRIM EXHIBITION OPENS AT MORTON GALLERY
"I have a good time making art. It makes you feel good and encourages one to imagine," says Grim, an artist from Bethany whose latest exhibition opened Friday at the Philip Morton Gallery.
The viewer can easily find themselves lost in the brilliant colors of her floral detail. Her work features a meditative feel and helps capture the viewer's imagination.
She painted several of her recent works while visiting the famous flower garden at Sissinghurst Castle in Kent, England. Here is Grim with her work The Three Poppies on the right and Joy in the Garden, on the left.
Her art consists of acrylic, collage and fabrics now too. She can do a wonderful job making her acrylic paintings resemble watercolor or oil.
Scott Causey joins Grim at this exhibition with his remarkable and unique ceramic colorful figurines.
Causey has been doing this type of art since he was 20. He is now 47. He says he quickly discovered that the colors often were not chemically compatible with the works he was trying to create. So Causey came up with the modular design style of combining different segments of various colors to achieve the desired result. He has developed a complicated process where he builds the figurines in segments and attaches them to obtain the desired color combination and design.
Grim's and Causey's artwork will appear at the Philip Morton Gallery in downtown Rehoboth Beach through August 25. Please see the Cape Gazette for details.

DANGEROUS WEEKEND FOR OCEAN SWIMMERS; MANY BEACHES "RED FLAGGED"--- As predicted, the weekend's surf has been some of the worst we have seen all summer. Most beach patrols along the shore kept swimmers on a short leash this past week. In many cases, people were only allowed at most into knee-deep water.
A 24-year-old man nearly drowned at the south end of the Gordons Pond swimming beach around 3 p.m. Sunday. He reportedly struggled in the ocean and was initially unresponsive when pulled to the beach. In years past, Gordons Pond had lifeguards, but no longer. He was alert when taken by ambulance to Beebe Hospital. See Randi Miller's WGMD article for the details.
The steep drop-off also posed a special threat to small children who might drop directly into the surf from the ledge. Dewey Beach Patrol was proactive Sunday evening with an "after hours patrol" to discourage people from entering the ocean.
MOTHER, TODDLER INJURED IN SHOOTING ACCIDENT--- Delaware State Police spent much of Sunday afternoon investigating an accidental shooting that injured a mother and her toddler. Around 12:15 p.m., police received reports that the mother was headed to the hospital with her injured baby. A 21-year-old man in the house was supposedly cleaning and/or unloading his 45-caliber handgun when it discharged. The injuries were not said to be life threatening, but one source suggested that the child would be flown to Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children to treat a leg injury. The incident happened on Mayhew Drive in Cedar Creek Estates in the Lincoln area.
2 MEDEVACS THE PAST FEW DAYS FROM O.C.--- EMS personnel in Ocean City flew two patients to trauma centers the past few days. In the first case, a man in his 40's heard a "pop" in his neck leading to temporary paralysis in his arms and legs. This happened while he was in the surf just north of the Golden Sands around 12:10 p.m. Thursday. He had fluid in his lungs but was alert when flown to a trauma center.
Around 12:50 a.m. Saturday, a 20-year-old man fell from the passenger seat of a moving pick-up truck near Ocean Gateway and Old Bridge Road in West O.C. The man was taken to the Atlantic General Hospital helipad where he was flown directly to a trauma center. More info is in this WGMD.com report.
MERR INSTITUTE INVESTIGATES 3 MORE DEAD LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES--- Suzanne Thurman, MERR Institute executive director, says her organization investigated the deaths of three loggerheads this past weekend. They came to shore at Cape Henlopen, Pickering Beach and Broadkill. She said all three appear to be victims of boat propellers.
REHOBOTH BANDSTAND GENERATES NOISE COMPLAINTS FROM ACROSS TOWN--- The wind was from the northeast/east-northeast Friday night when Rehoboth Beach police received two seemingly unrelated complaints that the noise from the bandstand was too loud. The complaints were received between 8:25 p.m. and 9 p.m. from State Road and Dover Street. On stage performing was Philbilly.
DRUNK MAN GETS STUCK IN SUSSEX COUNTY MARSH, TAKEN INTO POLICE CUSTODY--- A 25-year-old man who said he had about 15 drinks became stuck after swimming in the canal and ending up in the marsh. It was reported just before 8 p.m. Saturday off Rebecca Road in South Bethany. Firefighters, a private boater and South Bethany police caught the man and he was back on land, and in police custody, by 8:13 p.m.
