HOMELESS LIVING UNDER REHOBOTH DRAWBRIDGE?
An occasional homeless person living in downtown Rehoboth Beach has not been uncommon in years past. But with the recent dismantling of "tent city," one has to wonder where those people are living now.
This is the catwalk beneath the Rehoboth Beach drawbridge and the concrete footer at the base of the west side of the bridge. The constant noise from vehicles driving over the bridge grates is loud and unsettling, which makes one wonder if anybody is actually sleeping under here.
Police have been here a couple times this past week, searching for a suspect.
One man who lives in the area said he has been concerned about the people he has seen coming and going from under the bridge, noting that they are either homeless or fears they come here to use drugs.
Homeless people have been reported elsewhere in town this summer, sleeping on the beach at the dunes south of the city limits, on the beach north of the Henlopen, along Silver Lake and in the backyards of a couple homes. The police keep regular checks on Grove Park, where the city has had problems in years past.
The homeless are typically gone during the day and return at night, often to find that their camping materials have been removed.

ON BIKE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH WITH SCOOTER
Country club planning fundraiser
A female bicyclist was seriously injured when a man riding a motor scooter collided with her on Coastal Highway near the Kmart outside Rehoboth Thursday night.
Sgt. Paul G. Shavack, state police spokesman, says preliminary information indicates that around 10 p.m., a scooter operated by a 32-year-old man collided with a bicycle operated by the 21-year-old female. The collision happened in the northbound bike/bus lane.
The bicyclist, Sgt. Shavack says, was taken to Beebe Hospital by ambulance and admitted in serious condition. The man declined to take an ambulance to Beebe Hospital.
Troopers continue to investigate this incident, Sgt. Shavack noted. No charges have been filed at this time pending the conclusion of the investigation.
Reaction to the story on WGMD.com indicates that the bicyclist is an exchange student.
"The bicyclist is a beautiful young girl from Romania who came to the US to work for the summer," one of the comments states. "She is a server here at Rehoboth Beach Country Club."
Her condition apparently worsened when she reached the hospital. They said she was flown to Christiana Hospital early Friday where she had undergone two surgeries.
The staff, members and friends at the country club are putting together a fundraiser to fly her aunt from Romania to America and then try to prepare for her medical expenses.

DELDOT: PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS COMING TO COASTAL HIGHWAY
What is ironic about the WALK SMART sign board is that the sidewalk ends. But that is about to change, says Robert B. King, DelDOT community relations officer.
The Coastal Highway pedestrian improvements project, he says, is slated to begin construction in September and will fill in many gaps in the current sidewalk network to allow for a continuous pedestrian corridor. The project also promises to provide for crosswalks on Coastal Highway at several locations.
Page 5 of the Pedestrian Safety Task Force Report released earlier this year makes several recommendations. The sign boards and the overhead pedestrian signs have already been implemented. King notes that some benches are being installed at bus stops as part of the project and Delmarva Power is slated to begin installing additional lights at select locations.
DelDOT's Traffic Safety is responsible for the message boards along Coastal Highway used for the pedestrian safety campaign this summer. The campaign is a joint effort among the Delaware State Police, DelDOT and Office of Highway Safety to promote pedestrian safety along Coastal Highway between Five Points and the southern limits of Dewey. This is similar to the effort that occurred on Kirkwood Highway in New Castle County, King noted.

SEVERAL SURF INJURIES DESPITE RED FLAG WARNING
Lifeguards at the shore have been keeping beach visitors on a short leash this weekend. The Rehoboth Beach Patrol had raised the red flag on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Swimmers were limited how far they were allowed in the ocean.
But despite the warnings, EMS workers were called for several injuries. This was the scene in Ocean City south of the Carousel around noon on Saturday.
Dan Patrick, who happened to be on the beach when it happened, said he helped pull the male boogie boarder to safety after a wave crashed him onto the ground. "He was disoriented and couldn't stand, kept grabbing the back of his head and neck," Patrick said. The lifeguards and EMS personnel "boarded and collared" him and took him off on an ATV to the hospital.
Meanwhile, in Rehoboth Beach on Saturday, a 33-year-old man suffered a probable dislocated shoulder on Wilmington Avenue around 1:50 p.m. followed by an 11-year-old boy with a suspected spinal injury on Hickman Street at 2:35 p.m. They were taken to Beebe Hospital.

DUNNING TO OPEN RANCH AS CHURCH TO FEED HOMELESS

Visitors to Dunning's picnic on Saturday had a wonderful time. She always welcomes everybody and shares delicious dishes smiling and thanking life.
Dale D. Dunning created several "Jusst Sooup" community kitchens in Delaware. Her nonprofit organization helps people amazingly, and always "in Jesus name."
Dunning plans to convert her home, built by the reality TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," into a church and feed the homeless starting Sept. 4. See this WHYY-TV report for details. The property is west of Lewes off U.S. Route 9.
"Jusst Sooup ministry means to me that when I met Pastor Dale D. Dunning I saw God's love in action, letting me know that there is hope," says Edna Wilson. The Dunnings "accept everyone regardless of any kind of persuasion, all are equal, that's how Dale shows the love of Jesus," she observed. Rudy Fields added "I like this place because it is one-of-a-kind, nobody else has the sense of hospitality that The Dunning's have."
Loraine Robertson from Fredericksburg said she visits the kitchen in Rehoboth "quite a few times and my first time there I just feel so at peace; the food was delicious." Dunning "is a wonderful person, she and her husband, and she serves the community well and it is a blessing to have anyone like her around... I have never met anyone like Dale Dunning."
All kinds of folks share the Dunning's table, her ministry is extremely inclusive. Nothing stops Dale's wonderful sense of oneness.

SHOULDN'T HE BE VACATIONING IN VIRGINIA BEACH?
License plate experts tell us that the car shown in this photo probably belongs to Speaker William J. Howell of the Virginia House of Delegates. It has Virginia tag with the number "1" on it, along with a Howell bumper sticker.
Jeff Balk spotted the car on Rehoboth Avenue outside of town the week before last. Possibly some related security vehicles were parked at the Breakers Hotel this past week, also with Virginia tags.

NASCAR DRIVER JEFF GORDON SPEAKS TO FANS FROM R.B.
BANDSTAND

Much to the delight of NASCAR enthusiasts, driver Jeff Gordon arrived at the Rehoboth Beach bandstand this past Wednesday to promote next month's AAA 400 Sprint Cup Race at Dover International Speedway. Until this past Saturday night's race, Gordon was the points leader as the "Race for the Chase" narrows down to just a few more races. He finished in fourth place at last year's AAA 400.
Gordon joined anxiously waiting fans at the bandstand for a question-and-answer session.
Accompanying him were Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head and emcee Mike Bagley, host of Morning Drive.
Many of the questions came from young race fans and brought a lot of laughter from the crowd, especially from one young fan who asked "when he was going to retire?" This actually had laughter and a little booing. After the Q&A session, Gordon helped Calagione complete his ALS fundraising challenge, by dumping a bucket of ice water over his head.
Jeff then hurried off for another commitment in North Carolina, disappointing many fans (some were waiting for hours hoping to get an autograph). People seemed to enjoy his short visit and he promised to return.

HISTORICAL MARKER DEDICATION FOR LAKES SCHEDULED FOR TODAY
The dedication ceremony for a new Delaware state historical marker commemorating the history of Silver Lake and Lake Comegys is scheduled for today at 10 a.m.
Stephen Marz, Delaware Public Archives director, will preside over the dedication. Representative Pete Schwartzkopf, Speaker of the House, and Senator Ernie Lopez, are the legislative sponsors for the marker. They, along with David Small, DNREC secretary are scheduled to speak at the dedication.
This is only the second state historical marker in Delaware dedicated to a natural resource and the only one in the Rehoboth area. The ceremony will take place at the state's bird refuge on Silver Lake's shoreline, at the south end of the Silver Lake Bridge, at the end of Bayard Avenue, where it then becomes Silver Lake Drive. POWERED PARACHUTE OVER REHOBOTH
David Koster shot this photo of a powered parachute flying over downtown Rehoboth Beach the Sunday before last. It sounded almost like a blimp flying over town.
A friend of his saw it take off from the field adjacent to the Little League field on Holland Glade Road outside Rehoboth.

TALL SHIP REMAINS IN O.C. THROUGH SEPT. 1
It is not too late to get a peak at the El Galeón Andalucía, which will be on display in Ocean City through Labor Day.
The tall ship is a replica of the late 16th century European ships that explored much of the known and unknown world.

When the lifeguards raised the red flag this weekend as the seas were getting rough, Anita Peghini-Räber had already captured the moment of emotion, the feeling of the powerful waves crashing onto the shore. Maybe she's so good because one of her sons is on the beach patrol again this summer? This work is actually entitled "Splash" as it captures the freshness of the choppy surf in early spring.
Anita showed us Friday one of her new series of beautiful ocean waves breaking on the beach here in Rehoboth.
Doesn't she capture the awesome beauty of nature? This is her sunlit wave painted in oil. Incredibly, she paints from memory.

UPDATE ON GENCO CHALLENGER INCIDENT--- Genco Shipping & Trading Limited, owners of the cargo ship where two of its crew died last week and a third was injured, posted this brief news release on the company's website last Monday. Still little new info released from the Coast Guard as well. Petty Officer Nick Ameen, Coast Guard spokesman, did add that the Coast Guard conducted a boarding before the ship was permitted up the Delaware River and it was not deemed unsafe for entry. The incident, he says, remains under investigation and he still would not speculate on a motive or who the suspected perpetrator was. As of Sunday, the Challenger remained in port in Morrisville, Pennsylvania. Check for its current location here.
UPDATE ON LAST WEEKEND'S "SUSPICIOUS DEATH" IN O.C.--- Police issued this news release last week stating that "no foul play was involved" in what police had initially called a "suspicious death" at the Princess Bayside Beach Hotel-South the previous day. Police did not speculate on the cause of death for the 38-year-old man.
MAN DIES AFTER ASSAULT IN O.C.--- Ironically, Ocean City issued this news release this past Sunday that a 37-year-old man who was discovered around 3:10 a.m. in the Plim Plaza parking lot had died after an assault. But Ocean City is not yet calling it a homicide.
Ocean City has had few homicides in recent years. "As far as the last homicide in Ocean City goes," says Lindsay O'Neal, police public affairs specialist, "we had an incident that was labeled as a homicide in January 2013. This was not your typical homicide though because the two were friends that got into an argument and Post was pushed to the ground and hit his head on ice. It was obvious that Nottingham had no real intention of killing Post," O'Neal states. "The last real murder was the Sifrit [double murder] case in 2002."
MAN SUFFERS C-5 FRACTURE AFTER FALL FROM BED, FLOWN TO TRAUMA CENTER--- A man arrived at the 75th Street Medical Center in Ocean City around 9 p.m. Sunday suffering from a spinal cord injury after a fall from bed. He was taken by ambulance to Jolly Roger and flown to a trauma center in Baltimore after sustaining a suspected C-5 fracture.
MERR RESPONDS TO 3 MORE LOGGERHEAD TURTLE DEATHS--- Suzanne Thurman, MERR executive director, says her organization investigated three more loggerhead turtle deaths this past week. Two were discovered on Saturday in Bethany and on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal in Henlopen Acres. Tuesday afternoon they had another on 3R's Road in the Delaware Seashore State Park. She said the turtle deaths this year are "a little higher but not alarmingly so" over this point last year.
O.C. LIFEGUARD BITTEN BY PIT BULL--- An Ocean City lifeguard was bitten by a pit bull around 12:30 p.m. Sunday when he went to advise the owner of the dog that dogs are not allowed on the beach. As he was talking with the owner at 134th Street, the dog bit him on his arm, causing some scratches. Because of the cool weather, he was wearing his beach patrol jacket which helped prevent further injury. At last word, they were talking about citing the owner.
