NO ELECTION IN REHOBOTH BEACH THIS SUMMER AFTER ALL!
Although he had filed to seek another term as Rehoboth Beach commissioner, Comm. Jay D. Lagree announced last Tuesday that he is withdrawing his petition to seek re-election.
Comm. Lagree intends to serve out his term and allow newcomer, Donald G. Preston, Jr., to assume his seat without an election. Preston is the owner of the new Oliver Whitby store which is in the spot once occupied by the Kevin Fleming Gallery at 239 Rehoboth Avenue.
Comm. Lagree said he did not want just anyone to step in and file a last-minute petition to run for his soon-to-be-open seat, so he had submitted his petition. "And then in the middle of the filing period, Don Preston came along. He's young, smart, has the same goals and objectives for Rehoboth Beach as I have," Comm. Lagree explains. "It was a dream come true for me. All of the commissioners have talked to him. He passed the tests," he adds.
So, no election again this summer in Rehoboth Beach!
Statement by Comm. Jay Lagree:
After much consideration, I am withdrawing my candidacy for City Commission. I have been honored to serve on the Commission and to serve the citizens of Rehoboth Beach, and I had intended to continue my service. However, I am getting older every day. My hearing has become a problem although, with correction, I can do pretty well most of the time.
Having served with Patrick Gossett and getting to know Don Preston, I am convinced the city will continue to be well-served. They are both leaders in our community and share my goals and objectives for the city. With those two qualified and capable candidates, I feel I can now step away at the end of my term, confident that they will serve the citizens well.
I look forward to the last months of my term of office and thank the city and our voters for all they have done to support me in my role as Commissioner.

BMW DRIVER CHARGED AFTER TURNING KIA ON ITS SIDE
This isn't something one sees often on Rehoboth Avenue. This Kia Forte landed on its side in the ocean block after a collision with the black BMW 320 around 3 p.m. last Monday.
The driver of the BMW was charged with inattentive driving as she was attempting to change lanes from the left to the right lane in front of the Kia, says Lt. Jaime Riddle, police spokesman.
"It was a sideswipe collision," he explains, "in which the front driver side of the Kia Forte ran up on the passenger side front corner of the BMW causing the Kia to turn onto its side."
The Kia driver was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries.

ASHLEY BIDEN SPOTTED IN DOWNTOWN REHOBOTH BEACH!
So few people know what Ashley Biden looks like, they probably don't realize when she's eating or walking right next to them in town. But she's been a regular at businesses in both Rehoboth and Dewey.
That's her in the jean jacket on the left while at Nalu's in the ocean block of Rehoboth Avenue on Friday.
According to Wikipedia, her 42nd birthday was the previous day.

"The team identified four M71 boosters that were found during the redistribution of dredged material. After positively identifying the ordnance, the team safely disposed of the items by detonation," says 1st Lt. Jackie Noffsinger, spokeswoman for the 436th Airlift Wing.
People across town heard that blast around 1:40 p.m. Video of the actual blast was posted by "anywheresfine" on Instagram. Click on the below image to play.
Here is a diagram of the entire M71 from BulletPicker. The booster appears to be the module below the fuze.

HALF A DOZEN PROTESTERS PRAY IN FRONT OF "THE PINES"
A group "coming to pray the rosary" this past Saturday obtained a protest permit for the area outside "The Pines" in the second block of Baltimore Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach.
Why in front of The Pines? "We thought that Lisa Blunt Rochester would have a fundraiser today at 11 o'clock and it looks like, where is she?" one of the participants asked who identified himself only as Richard. On its website, The Pines had promoted a "Drag Brunch Fundraiser supporting Lisa Blunt Rochester" during that timeframe. That post was later removed.
"We have no problem with the restaurant," Richard added, "We have, I have no problem with the drags."
Richard indicated that they were there protesting electric vehicle mandates, abortion "and a lot of other things."
Tyler Townsend, co-owner of "The Pines," said Saturday that the restaurant had not made a statement at this point regarding the protest.
TORCH RUN ARRIVES IN REHOBOTH DESPITE ADVISORY
Cpl. Michael Aberman of Delaware State Police Troop 7 carried the torch for the Special Olympics this past Wednesday in the smoky haze on Bayard Avenue into Rehoboth Beach.
The caravan was as impressive and diverse as the President's motorcade.
The run was canceled the following day while some components of the ceremony moved indoors.

WHITEHEAD RETURNS TO GALLERY 50 WITH "WATER'S EDGE"
Gallery 50 welcomed artist Pat Whitehead this past Friday with her latest exhibition, "Water's Edge," and here she is with the painting that bears the name of her show. This is at least her fifth solo exhibition at Gallery 50 which has been representing her since 2007.
The show consists of all oil paintings, except for four black and white drawings in charcoal, graphite and conté.
Whitehead says this work is a culmination of years of exploring the beauty and mystery of our natural world and the stories of the people who inhabit it. "I hope it reminds people of the importance of harmony and balance on our planet," she adds.

The exhibition will be on display through June 28
