EMS AND POLICE DISPATCHED TO THE WRONG "RODNEY"
FOR CARDIAC ARREST
First responders were dispatched to the wrong street last Thursday night
after a man was reported unconscious and pulseless.
When the call came into the Rehoboth Beach 9-1-1 center around 10:22 p.m.,
Dewey Beach police were dispatched to 11 Rodney Street (typically labeled
as Rodney Avenue now) in Dewey along with the Rehoboth ambulance and county
paramedics.
As the Rehoboth dispatcher provided CPR instructions, Dewey Beach police
were first to arrive on the scene here on Rodney Avenue oceanside around 10:26
p.m. "We're having difficulty finding the residence," an officer
radios back, "can you have somebody come out to the street to us?"
Then another officer adds, "There's no 11 Rodney. We have 9 and 15."
About a minute later it becomes apparent that the medical emergency was actually
on Rodney Street in downtown Rehoboth Beach, not Dewey.
Crews are rerouted there and the Rehoboth ambulance calls out with a "priority
1" as they arrive on the scene about seven minutes after the call was
first dispatched. They continue CPR and are soon joined by county paramedics.
After about 45 minutes of CPR, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Confusion between the two Rodney streets has existed for years, and to complicate
matters, the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system that dispatchers rely on
for critical info was down Thursday evening when this emergency was reported.
While the Rodney in Rehoboth has been consistently labeled a "street,"
the one in Dewey has appeared on some maps, like this old Chamber of Commerce
map, as a "street." In recent years it has been more consistently
labeled as an "avenue" as it appears in Google
Maps and on the current Chamber
of Commerce map.
So far, city officials have had no comment regarding the incident.

WEDDING PARTY VS. BEACHGOERS
This isn't the first time that the beach wedding crowd has clashed with beach
visitors.
A Rehoboth Beach police officer was summoned here to the beach in front
of the Henlopen condo around 6:25 p.m. last Friday after a wedding
group asked some beachgoers to move for their permitted wedding event.
After some tactful negotiations by the officer, one of the beachgoers was
overheard saying that it's their moment and she did not mind moving although
they did point out that the permit was issued for the area a bit farther north
at Lake Avenue and Surf Avenue. They also wanted to know where the boundaries
are for something like this.

only states that "This permit grants non-exclusive use of the specified
location on the beach only."

BIDEN'S 7th VISIT TO TOWN SINCE TAKING OFFICE
The roar of high-performance fighter jets once again replaced the sputtering
sounds made by overhead banner planes this past weekend in Rehoboth.
It was all part of President Joe Biden's seventh visit to his beach home
since entering office.
Last Friday was the Bidens' 45th
wedding anniversary. Highlights from this trip included Willow,
the
presidential cat, flying aboard Marine One, and the President's
bike mishap. The Daily Mail published
these photos of Dr. Jill and Ashley Biden walking along the beach.
Restaurant owners were hoping the presidential couple would come to town
for an anniversary celebration. Dr. Jill Biden did visit Browseabout Books
on Sunday and the President came into town for about an hour to attend mass
on Saturday here at St. Edmond's.

After mass, he showed
reporters that his leg was doing fine after the bike incident, and then
waived and hopped back in his 16-vehicle motorcade to return to his beach
house.

The Bidens remain at the North Shores home for the newly created
holiday and are expected to return today in Marine One which brought
them this past Friday.

GIRL CRITICALLY INJURED IN BOAT MISHAP
Three people were injured, one critically, around 5:15 p.m. this past Thursday
after a boating accident that involved a vessel towing children on inflatables.
A boater, according to a DNREC statement, had been pulling six children on
two tubes behind this mid-sized center-console boat, with a 75-horsepower
outboard motor, when the mishap occurred. The boat eventually struck this
dock in the Millsboro area at the end of Warwick Road which is off the Indian
River Bay.
A Good Samaritan came to the rescue along with five fire companies,
Trooper 2, the Coast Guard and Delaware Natural Resources
Police.
Trooper 2 landed at the Indian River power plant and flew the critically
injured girl to a trauma center. Another girl was taken by ambulance to the
hospital with less serious injuries. Delaware Natural Resources Police
is investigating the incident.

8 INJURED IN CRASH ON JOHN J. WILLIAMS HWY
NEAR REHOBOTH
Eight people were injured including two who were flown to a trauma center
after this two-car crash last Friday outside Rehoboth. It happened on John
J. Williams Highway at Warrington Road around 10:45 p.m.
The 2009 Hyundai Sonata was headed west on John J. Williams
Highway approaching the intersection with Warrington Road, says
Cpl. Leonard DeMalto, state police spokesman. At the same time, he says, the
2019 BMW 430i was traveling east on John J. Williams Highway
as it was approaching the same intersection. As the driver of the Sonata
attempted to turn left onto southbound Warrington Road, Cpl. DeMalto
said, the driver turned directly into the path of the oncoming BMW.
The front of the BMW struck the front of the Sonata in
the intersection. Both vehicles were occupied by four occupants each. All
suffered significant injuries. Firefighters spent nearly an hour extricating
five of the injured. Trooper 2 and LifeNet 64 flew two of
them to a trauma center from the Beacon Middle School.

The Lewes Fire Dept. assisted Rehoboth Beach VFC at the
scene along with Millsboro and Mid-Sussex providing additional
ambulances. The intersection of John J. Williams Highway and Warrington
Road was closed for more than five hours while the collision was investigated
and cleared.

This past week, four public restrooms in town have been tagged with graffiti.
This includes restrooms on Delaware Avenue, Baltimore Avenue,
the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand and at Grove Park.
No word yet from police if they are connected.
ANGRY MESSAGE SCRIBBLED ON PARKED VEHICLE WINDOW
Gone are the days when people would leave a friendly note on your windshield
asking you to kindly re-park your auto.
Now they take out lipstick, a Sharpie, crayon or whatever, and write a nasty
message right across the driver's-side door window.
This was seen on Olive Avenue off First Street around 5:45 p.m. this past
Saturday.

This past Friday, Senator Tom Carper came to the CAMP
Rehoboth Community Center to spend time with the staff and board

said. Senator Carper ended by thanking CAMP Rehoboth for its efforts
to improve the health and well-being of LGBTQ people here and across the state.

FUNLAND CELEBRATES ITS 60th YEAR!
It is hard to believe but this year Funland celebrates its 60th
anniversary, says Christopher Darr, Funland's personnel manager.
"Our family is thankful for all of our loyal customers and the memories
they have made over the years," he said. For those visiting the park
this summer, you will see special 60th-anniversary merchandise at the Funland
store including the Postcards of Fun project to celebrate 60
years of memories. There will be other events throughout the summer, he said.
Funland also has a new ride for the 2022 season called the FreeSpin.
The FreeSpin opened Memorial Day Weekend and it has been
a big hit with customers of all ages. Like the FreeFall it replaces,
the new FreeSpin is a drop tower but it is taller and also spins
riders around the tower as they drop! It is a must-rider for the summer of
2022!

STUART KINGSTON GALLERY OPENS ON COASTAL
HWY
The Stuart Kingston Gallery,
a staple of the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk for nearly a century, became
the latest business to leave downtown for the highway. The store celebrated
its ribbon cutting and grand opening this past week.

The new gallery is in the Shoppes of Camelot on Coastal Highway.
Mauria Stein, the store's owner, says she lacked foot traffic in downtown.
"I had more people in my new shop the month of April when we were unpacking
than I did the whole month of July [last summer]," she said. The parking
situation in downtown Rehoboth Beach is a significant problem, she pointed
out.
Elite PT, which was next to her boardwalk shop, will be moving into
her former location.
She wants people to know that she has gone back to her roots with four generations
of experience in the jewelry business and she carries items in all price ranges
including classic jewelry, high fashion jewelry and estate jewelry. She will
also buy estate jewelry, arrange for repair work and custom design of all
jewelry including watches.
That's Maurice Stein, her grandfather, who opened the auction house and
gallery on the boardwalk by the Henlopen Hotel in 1930.

NEW THIS SUMMER AT THE REHOBOTH BEACH MUSEUM
The Rehoboth Beach Museum held a reception this past Thursday for
its latest exhibition, Cape
Henlopen Lighthouse, Beacon, Attraction and Icon, and also to highlight
what's new this summer.
That's Jean Brolund, who does some of the walking tours, chatting with the
exhibition's curators, David McDonald and Roland Forster. Forster says that
the lighthouse exhibition is divided into three parts. One examines the history
of the beacon itself, and then as an attraction, and finally as an icon.
The historical society is close to raising enough money to install the iconic
Dolle's
sign says Nancy Alexander, the museum's director. Workers have been installing
mounts for the sign this past week. She says they hope to have it mounted
before the end of June. It isn't the museum's only historical business sign,
but it is certainly the largest!
Downtown
walking tours are back and open houses at the Anna Hazzard Tent House
are scheduled for selected Wednesdays this summer.
Other events include the Culinary
History of Southern Delaware on June 23, the Acoustic
Jam on July 20, Piping
Out on September 5, and the 17th Annual Beach
Ball on September 10.

MAN NEARLY DROWNS IN CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK---
A man who got caught in a rip and was rescued by bystanders was taken to the
hospital this past Saturday. It happened in the Cape Henlopen State Park
around 12:45 p.m. He was last reported conscious and talking.
WOMAN STRUCK BY FLY-AWAY UMBRELLA TAKEN TO HOSPITAL--- A
59-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after she was struck in the face
by a fly-away umbrella around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. It happened in the Lewes
area on Crooked Hammock Way at Beach Plum Dunes. Her injuries
sounded minor.
