DEWEY BEACH'S MAYOR DALE COOKE RETIRES IN STYLE!

Not many politicians these days are able to do what Dewey Beach Mayor Dale Cooke has done: Go out in style with the respect of the voters. Steve "Monty" Montgomery of The Starboard and Jimmy O'Conor of Woody's Bar & Grill hosted the well-attended retirement party for Mayor Cooke last Thursday at The Starboard.

"For Jimmy O'Conor and myself to host a little Thank You Happy Hour in honor of outgoing Mayor Dale Cooke was an honor," Montgomery said. "Having so many former mayors and commissioners all come together in thanks to the work Dale has put in was great, but to have all those folks who themselves have dedicated so many hours to helping Dewey grow in such a positive direction is what Dewey Beach is truly all about," he added.

At least three previous town mayors attended along with commissioners, town employees and Rep. Peter Schwartzkopf who read a tribute for Mayor Cooke from the General Assembly to the enthusiastic crowd.

"Dale was very patient with me learning the process of being a town manager," Bill Zolper told the crowd. As mayor, Zolper said, Mayor Cooke helped guide and lead him through what was expected. "I greatly appreciate that and I know on behalf of the Town of Dewey Beach we all greatly appreciate your patience, your service to this town," he added as he presented Mayor Cooke with a framed copy of the invitation for his retirement party.

"Dewey is one of three best things in my life: my family, Dewey Beach and the Marine Corps. I wouldn't change my life at all," Mayor Cooke said. He added that he was proud "that things have finally calmed down and we are not in such bad financial shape. We got a good town manager, everything is going well. The commissioners are working very well together," he pointed out. Mayor Cooke said he was pleased he helped to build bridges between commissioners and the business community and the town in general.

A small town with people volunteering their time because they love Dewey is what it is all about, Montgomery pointed out. "Dale has served Dewey in so many ways, as have so many others, at the end of the day when we can all gather and raise a glass in thanks... that's how things should always be done in a town so near and dear to so many of us. And doing that is what drives myself and Jimmy from Woody's to keep doing fun positive things for this community which supports each of our businesses so well," Montgomery added.

CPR, AED HELP RESUSCITATE HEART ATTACK VICTIM AT DEWEY PUB

Dewey Beach police, Rehoboth Beach EMS and Sussex County paramedics helped save a 61-year-old man who collapsed in cardiac arrest while suffering a suspected heart attack this past Thursday evening in the Dewey Beer Company. Sgt. Clifford Dempsey, police spokesman, says the officer performed CPR on the victim until the ambulance crew arrived.

They then used an AED to defibrillate him three times. The paramedic crew, which came from the greatest distance, arrived after about nine minutes. Glenn Marshall, Sussex County EMS spokesman, says thanks to their efforts with prompt CPR and the AED it made it possible for medics to get the patient to the cardiac catheterization lab which could lead to a positive outcome in this situation. Sgt. Dempsey said the man was last reported in stable condition on Monday.

EMS CREW FREES WOMAN LOCKED IN REHOBOTH LIBRARY

A woman called for help around 3:20 p.m. this past Saturday after she was locked in the Rehoboth Beach Library which closed at 3 p.m.

Officials were unable to find emergency contact info for the library staff in the 9-1-1 computer system and the ambulance crew which was dispatched could not find a key for the library's front gate in the Knoxbox. She was trapped inside that gate.

But fortunately, the woman was able to enter the library via the automatic sliding doors and the key the EMS crew found in the Knoxbox opened the library's backdoor.

When asked if she fell asleep, she replied "I just got locked in" and took off with her bicycle.

POLICE ARREST MAN WITH GUN ON INDIAN RIVER INLET BRIDGE

Police received a complaint on the evening of Sunday, August 29, of three men hanging over the railing of the Indian River Inlet bridge pedestrian walkway.

A female state park officer was first to arrive to check on the three men. Capt. John McDerby, spokesman for State Parks Enforcement, says the officer smelled an odor of marijuana and proceeded to frisk the men. That is when she found a concealed 9 m.m. handgun on the one man.

Backup officers arrived minutes later. Capt. McDerby said the 26-year-old man was charged with felony possession of a weapon, possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct. No word on what they were doing on the bridge.

DOLLE'S SIGN COULD BECOME CITY PROPERTY!

A discussion item regarding the town's iconic Dolle's sign is listed on the agenda for the next Rehoboth Beach virtual commissioner workshop scheduled for this Wednesday. Dolle's Candyland owner Tom Ibach, who has consolidated his operation at 9 Rehoboth Avenue, has offered to give the sign on the old building to the city. Grotto Pizza purchased the old building earlier this year.

Chris Flood reported on the proposal in last Friday's Cape Gazette. Look for the workshop on the city's YouTube channel.

OCEAN WATER RESCUES

First responders kept busy this past week handling several surf/water rescues.

Around 1:15 p.m. last Thursday, a 33-year-old man went into the ocean to rescue his 9-year-old son in the Fenwick Island State Park off Ocean Park Lane. One or both of them nearly drowned. Both were taken to the hospital after swallowing some water but otherwise sounded ok.

Around 5:45 p.m. this past Saturday, Rehoboth Beach EMS/firefighters responded for a kayaker possibly in distress near Deauville about a "football field" offshore. A lifeguard on a paddleboard went to check on the kayaker who was later determined not to be in distress and continued paddling.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, a man went into the ocean to save a suspected drunk man who was in distress near Gordon's Pond. First responders headed to the scene, but both men made it safely to shore five minutes later.

AIDS WALK RETURNS LATER THIS MONTH TO R.B.

AIDS Walk Delaware in Rehoboth Beach takes off from Grove Park on Saturday, September 18, at 10 a.m. It has been 40 years since the AIDS epidemic started and 35 since the first AIDS Walk Delaware. Years later, AIDS Delaware, the Delaware HIV Consortium and other AIDS/HIV service providers statewide are still striving to reduce the stigma of HIV, raise awareness, and provide HIV-informed community health and education to all Delawareans.

Great things have happened since the first Walk in 1986. New HIV cases have declined and advances in medicine now allow people living with HIV to thrive and live more normal healthy lives. But there is still much work to do. The Walk helps ensure that all Delawareans know their HIV status and risk and that those living with HIV have the resources and treatment they need to thrive.

Please visit the website for more info, or to register or donate. People interested in volunteering can email.

GARY FISHER RETURNS TO GALLERY 50 WITH REFLECTIONS!

Gary Fisher opened his latest show, Reflections, at Gallery 50 this past Friday. He was scheduled to have a show about this time last year which was canceled because of the pandemic. Here is Fisher with his Sunrise Reflections 2.

Fisher started this exhibition roughly when the pandemic began. "It is kind of my journey and reflections on life through the pandemic starting with really dark pieces which I never have done before... then as we started to get more normal, my color came back," he explains. On the right is an example of one of his "dark pieces" which is in contrast to his more colorful returning-to-normal works on the left.

For this show, he painted with oil on canvas for the larger pieces or on archive paper for the smaller works. He created these small floral pieces and several little bright abstracts using his garden as the subject.

This exhibition will run through September 22. Please see the Gallery 50 website for info.

OTHER NEWS:

THE FINAL MERR REPORT--- Suzanne Thurman from the MERR Institute reports that her organization attempted to assist a dolphin that subsequently died. It was found in the Indian River Bay at Pot-Nets Bayside. She says it was one of the offshore species of bottlenose dolphins, so far from its natural habitat.

Thurman says this season followed on the heels of a busy seal season. "We are seeing changes in animal patterns, such as seal pupping here in Delaware. Our summer was marked by the very sorrowful event of the fin whale that stranded as it neared death. Conversely, we also witnessed huge numbers of dolphins who are attracted to the rich food sources of the Delaware Bay and coastal waters, and seem to be thriving, and at the same time providing beachgoers and boaters with the joyful opportunity of witnessing them. But what I noticed this summer was the heightened level of care and concern that people showed towards these animals. I am always moved by their compassion, and thankful that we can do our work with these animals in a community that exudes such heartfelt caring," she added.

EMS RESPONDS TWICE IN ONE DAY FOR SAME WOMAN O.D.--- State troopers and EMS crews responded twice this past Wednesday for a woman who overdosed in the Roadway Inn outside of Rehoboth. The first time she was revived with Naloxone and declined to go to the hospital. But a computer check indicated that she was "wanted" and a trooper took her to the court to pay a fine. She was released, returned to the Roadway Inn only to overdose a second time around 9:15 p.m. She was taken to the hospital at that time and was last reported still alive.

O.C.P.D. INVESTIGATING AFTER UNRESPONSIVE INFANT WAS TAKEN TO MED CENTER--- Ocean City police were called to investigate after a four-month-old was taken "unresponsive" to the 10th Street Medical Center around 10:35 a.m. this past Sunday. No word yet from police on the child's condition or what police suspect happened.
