SOME RESORT RESTAURANTS CLOSE FOR COVID

For the second time in just over a week, the Delaware Division of Public Health is asking people at the Delaware beach resorts, particularly in Rehoboth and Dewey, to get tested for Covid-19. Officials say the recommendation comes after about 100 persons tested positive in Rehoboth last Thursday. Testing in Dewey last Friday also identified another dozen persons as Covid positive.

Testing events have been scheduled for today at The Starboard restaurant and for Thursday at the Epworth United Methodist Church outside of Rehoboth. Additional community testing sites in the beach area are likely to be scheduled in the next week or so. Registration is open at http://delaware.curativeinc.com. The Starboard event is already booked, although they may be able to accommodate some who arrive without appointments.

Beebe Healthcare is also partnering with the Delaware Restaurant Association to offer testing today and tomorrow to staff of any food establishment in the beach area. Testing is scheduled for today at Big Fish Grill and tomorrow at Touch of Italy outside of Rehoboth. No pre-registration is required. Anyone with questions can call (302) 738-2545.

Several Dewey and Rehoboth restaurants have temporarily closed while others cut back on service this past weekend -- probably the busiest weekend so far this summer -- and several remain closed still today.

HammerHeads Dewey Beach, which voluntarily closed both of its locations last Thursday, placed a statement on its Facebook page Sunday stating that all of its employees were required to get tested. "As of today," the post reads, "we have been notified of a few positive test results of Covid-19. Fortunately, most of our staff has tested negative."

Steve "Monty" Montgomery from The Starboard said Sunday that many of the restaurants are closing for a short period of time to enable the staff to get tested. "I think Delaware restaurants have taken this crisis very seriously and this latest round of temporary closings only proves that, making sure our employees are safe is a great step forward," Montgomery added.

He expects many restaurants to switch to carryout service again while waiting for test results while some will limit hours and others will continue with their normal schedules. "Nobody is at fault here," Montgomery points out. "It's just the opposite. Business owners are working with so much uncertainty all while trying to do things correctly and safely. With so many more people testing, more people now in our area, of course the numbers of those testing positive are climbing. With so many younger people who are asymptomatic, it's easy to spread without folks realizing it," he added.

Woody's was among the first to announce changes on its Facebook page. Last Wednesday the restaurant posted a statement that it "has decided to move to carry-out only until we feel it's safe for my staff and customers to be in the restaurant. It's not a decision I take lightly and the safety and well-being of my staff and customers outweighs all other decisions."

But on Saturday, Woody's announced that it would also be discontinuing carryout and closing "because of increased anxieties within our beach community regarding Covid... This allows for the actions needed to be taken to prevent the spread of this virus and promote the health and safety of our families, coworkers, customers, and fellow industry members."

As a result, Woody's gave away 350 uncooked crab cakes which they were planning to sell to carryout customers. Many waited in a long line on Sunday.

The State of Delaware has issued this Travel Advisory for the Delaware Beaches.

LOCAL "SHARK MAN" VIDEO SEEN AROUND THE WORLD

Video of this man, later identified as Dave Williamson of Lewes, was seen around the world this past week as he opened the jaws of a shark while in the surf at the Cape Henlopen State Park the previous weekend. He was actually removing a hook from the shark that had just been reeled to shore. Some video clips led viewers to believe he just randomly grabbed a passing shark from the water.

The story appeared on TMZ and in The Sun as well as locally on WRDE and in the Cape Gazette.

DRUG BUST IN DOWNTOWN REHOBOTH BEACH

Rehoboth Beach police took three men into custody this past Tuesday after receiving a tip that one of them had received a shipment of drugs.

Several officers spent hours searching the men's hotel room on Wilmington Avenue and a vehicle in the parking garage.

Lt. Jaime Riddle, police spokesman, said on Saturday that a press release is forthcoming with details.

FIRST RESPONDERS RESUSCITATE MAN AT ATLANTIS INN

Emergency crews responded to the Atlantis Inn on Rehoboth Avenue just before 10 p.m. this past Friday where they found a 31-year-old man who was in cardiac arrest. They performed CPR and administered advanced life-support measures and successfully regained a pulse.

ONLINE FORUMS SCHEDULED FOR R.B. CANDIDATES

Gone are the days when candidates would wait until after Independence Day to start inserting their campaign signs! The colorful signs have been popping up like mushrooms the past couple of weeks all across town.

This year most voters will most likely have to rely on one of two Internet forums to "meet" the candidates. Charlie Browne, Rehoboth Beach Homeowners' Association president, says the CAMP/RBHA annual candidate forum will be an online event on Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. The link to the forum will be posted on the CAMP Rehoboth website.

The candidates will be at the CAMP Community Center without an audience, he says. They will be taking questions in advance and during the forum.

The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce candidates forum is scheduled for July 8, at 11 a.m. More info will be posted on the website when it is available.

The election this year is Saturday, August 8. Voters must register at city hall by July 9. Details are on the city website.

LUCKILY NOBODY HURT AFTER CAR RUNS ACROSS BANDSTAND WALK

The driver of the gray car jumped the curb between the crosswalk and the men's bathrooms at the Rehoboth bandstand, drove through the plantings and landed in the 20-minute-max parking area around 9:35 p.m. this past Saturday.

Police were quickly on the scene. The driver was given a "field sobriety test" and was later taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

DRIVER OF CHEVY CRASHES INTO LIBRARY

The driver of this Chevy Equinox drove over the curb and crashed into the rear of the Rehoboth Beach Library around 3:30 p.m. this past Friday. The car's tire was flattened in the process.

Lt. Jaime Riddle, police spokesman, says the driver was not issued a citation. The investigator determined the driver had accidentally pressed on the accelerator as opposed to the brake, he added.

PICKUP TRUCK TICKETED FOR PARKING ON CURB

This is an interesting dilemma that faces visitors parking pickup trucks on Rehoboth Avenue.

The driver of this truck tried apparently to keep it from hanging over the roadway by driving it up the curb.

But the Parking Department issued the truck a citation for violation of city code§ 92-28 which states that "No vehicle shall be parked upon any sidewalk, crosswalk, street intersection, public lawn, curb or drainage course."

FLAGS FOR HEROES TO RETURN NOV. 11!

The Lewes-Rehoboth Rotary Club normally on Memorial Day holds its "Flags for Heroes" event which is tied to a fundraiser. That is where the LRRC generates money which goes to good causes. This year the LRRC put its flags out on Memorial Day but did not conduct the fundraiser because of the Covid crisis. But now the fundraiser is scheduled for Veterans Day, November 11.

Bill Huntley, who was installing this display on Kings Highway this past Friday afternoon, says the LRRC is letting people know that "we wish them a Happy 4th of July and that we will be at it with our flags on Veterans Day and we are hoping they will sponsor us."

A lot of people looked for these flags on Memorial Day, he said. The flags were out there on Memorial Day but they were honoring the first-line heroes, the medical staff, instead of being part of a fundraiser. "We did not feel it was an appropriate time to be asking people for money," Huntley added. See the LRRC website for info.

REHOBOTH RECOGNIZES GAY PRIDE MONTH

Last Monday, June 22, the City of Rehoboth Beach flag was replaced with the rainbow flag at city hall.

Krys Johnson, city spokeswoman, says the flag flying is for Pride Month. Pride Month occurs in the United States to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. The city, Johnson says, does not have anything planned at this time for Black Lives Matter.

WEEKEND TRAFFIC; PROBABLY WORST SO FAR THIS SEASON

After looking at this past weekend's traffic congestion, it is hard to believe we are in the midst of a pandemic. This is the second block of Rehoboth Avenue around 2:30 p.m. this past Saturday. Notice the light at 1st Street is green but traffic is stalled!

Around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Coastal Highway traffic headed to the beaches was crawling starting at Route 16. The Cape Henlopen State Park lots were also packed.
